Official: Wijnaldum joins PSG on a free transfer

It is now official, Georginio Wijnaldum is the new Paris Saint-Germain player after putting pen to paper on a three-year contract at the Parc des Princes.

Wijnaldum ran down his contract at Liverpool, having turned down several club attempts to tie him down to a new deal.

The Dutch midfielder was an evergreen figure in Jurgen Klopp’s tactical set-up for five years. He recorded 227 appearances for the Reds across all competitions en route to winning the Premier League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.

However, the 30-year-old was keen to secure a fresh challenge away from the Premier League, informing the Merseyside outfit of his intention to leave months ago.

Although Wijnaldum seemed to be a step away from joining Barcelona on a free transfer, the Netherlands captain turned his back on Camp Nou at the 11th hour to team up with PSG. Ronald Koeman was desperate to make his compatriot a marquee midfield signing this summer but now has to find an alternative solution.

Thrilled about capturing the midfielder’s signature, Les Parisiens took to social media to announce their delight for completing Wijnaldum’s signing.

The player himself is enthusiastic about the prospect of linking up with the likes of Marco Verratti, Leandro Paredes, and Ander Herrera in Mauricio Pochettino’s star-studded midfield.

“Joining Paris Saint-Germain is a new challenge for me,” he said in his first interview as a PSG player.

“I am joining one of the best squads in Europe, and I want to bring all my desire and commitment to this ambitious project.

“Paris Saint-Germain have proved how good they are in recent years, and I am convinced that together we can go even further and higher.”
