Napoli ready to drop asking price for Kalidou Koulibaly
Kalidou Koulibaly could be on his way out in the summer as Napoli reportedly look to cash in on their in-demand asset.
Koulibaly has emerged as a transfer target for several most prominent clubs in the Premier League, including Manchester United, Liverpool, and Everton.
Reigning Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain have also registered an interest in the 29-year-old defender.
Over the past few transfer windows, the name of Koulibaly has been subjected to wild transfer speculations, with Napoli somehow managing to fend off his suitors each time.
For long, the Senegalese’s staggering €80million price tag has kept his admirers at bay.
However, recent reports in Italy have suggested the coveted centre-back has had a falling out with Napoli bigwig Aurelio De Laurentiis.
Koulibaly has apparently grown unhappy with his side’s inability to fight for silverware as the Partenopei face another trophyless season.
The sought-after defender remains an integral part of Napoli’s project in the eyes of Gennaro Gattuso. But a bust-up with De Laurentiis could cut short his spell in Naples.
The news of Italians’ readiness to lower their valuation of Koulibaly comes as a boost to Manchester United and Liverpool before all.
Both Premier League giants are desperate to add to their defensive options following leaky domestic campaigns.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen on finding the top-level centre-back to partner Harry Maguire as Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly both failed to live up to expectations.
Meanwhile, the injury of Virgil van Dijk early in the season has torn apart Jurgen Klopp’s backline.
Without the captain to keep it all together, Liverpool’s defense has crumbled and rarely managed to impress.
Now with Napoli ready to offload Kouliably for a figure close to €50m, United and Liverpool could reignite their interest in former Genk man.
Given the current state of the market and the devastating impact the coronavirus has had on the clubs’ finances, signing a player of Koulibaly’s calibre for the abovementioned price seems like a bargain capture.
