Liverpool reportedly identified replacement for Gini Wijnaldum

Liverpool have reportedly identified a replacement for Gini Wijnaldum should the Dutchman refuse to sign a new contract, according to reports in England

Wijanaldum has established himself as a permanent fixture in Jurgen Klopp‘s midfield, becoming one of the most highly-rated midfielders in the Premier League.

The 29-year-old has played a pivotal role in the Reds’ inexorable march towards their first league title in 30 years before the COVID-19 pandemic put their efforts at risk.

But, the Netherlands international’s contract at Anfield will run out in less than two years, with the Merseyside giants looking to offer him a new deal until 2024.

Wijnaldum has, however, shown little intention to sit at the negotiating table so far, although the club tried to tie him down with a new contract in January.

If the negotiations suffer another setback or the player refuses to pledge his future to Anfield, Liverpool will be looking to wrap up a deal with Borussia Monchengladbach for Denis Zakaria, as per the Express Sport.

Zakaria has emerged as one of the most consistent players in the Bundesliga this season, racking up 23 league outings and providing two goals and two assists.

Brought in from Young Boys for just €10million three years ago, the Switzerland international has become a star at Borussia-Park and an indispensable first-team member.

Strong with a ball at his fit, but equally comfortable in defense, the 23-year-old box-to-box midfielder could bring a physical presence to Liverpool’s midfield and relieve the pressure on Virgil Van Dijk when it comes to aerial duels.

Indeed, the Swiss giant has shown his willingness to sacrifice himself for the team and help to ease the pressure on his backline whenever it’s possible.

After proving himself in Germany’s top-flight, Zakaria seems ready to take the next step in his career and move on to some of the best clubs in Europe.
