Harry Maguire gives his assessment of Man United’s display against Atalanta

Harry Maguire delivered his verdict on Manchester United’s stunning 3-2 comeback victory over Atalanta in the Champions League.

Manchester United took their supporters to another emotional rollercoaster, picking themselves up from a 2-0 half-time deficit to beat Atalanta 3-2 at Old Trafford.

The Italians broke the deadlock in the 15th minute through Mario Pasalic, who turned the ball past David de Gea from point-blank range.

Only 14 minutes later, Juventus loanee Merih Demiral made Harry Maguire look silly, escaping the Red Devils’ captain mark to connect a free-header with Teun Koopmeiners’ pinpoint corner-kick delivery.

Despite producing several handsomely-looking opportunities, the Premier League heavyweights failed to find the back of the net inside the opening 45 minutes of play.

Though they headed into the second half with a mountain to climb, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men delivered another breathtaking second-half display to turn things around.

Marcus Rashford, who squandered a couple of decent chances before half-time, made no mistake from a close range eight minutes into the second half to pull the hosts one back.

Man United continued to apply the pressure on Atalanta’s stubborn backline, but a lack of finishing touch let them down on various occasions.

United’s equalizer came from an unlikely source as Maguire went from zero to hero to smash his well-struck first-time attempt into the bottom right corner in the 75th minute.

With a quarter of an hour left, the Red Devils looked primed to turn the tables on Atalanta and return to winning ways following a series of underwhelming domestic results.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who was quiet for most of the match, came up huge again to clinch all three points for his side, as he did against Villarreal on Matchday 2.

The 36-year-old superstar headed home Luke Shaw’s delightful cross to complete the turnaround and give United their second Champions League triumph this season.

In addition to heaping praise on Ronaldo, Maguire insisted his team deserved to win during the post-game interview.

“The first half we conceded two bad goals. Two big moments in the game,” the centre-back told BT Sport.

“For the first they caught us out and then the second it is a set-play that we shouldn’t be conceding.

“We created a lot of chances in the first half so we knew at half-time that the next goal would be crucial. We got the goals we needed and deserved and I think we deserved the win in the end. Yes, we made it difficult but it is a tremendous victory in the end.

“I had eyes on it all the way. I was right behind him. His leap, his timing, it was perfect right in the corner. We see it day in, day out in training and in the goals he has scored throughout his career. He has come up with a massive goal for us again in the Champions League.”
