Liverpool 3-1 Man City: Darwin Nunez Impresses on Competitive Debut

Liverpool's new domestic season got off to a flying start as Jurgen Klopp's side dispatched Manchester City 3-1 in Saturday's Community Shield showpiece.

After seeing their quadruple dreams crushed by Man City on the final weekend of the 2021/22 Premier League season, the Reds were motivated to gain their revenge at Leicester City's King Power.

Household right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold fired Liverpool to a scintillating start as his first-time effort from just outside the box took a slight deflection to trick Ederson in the 21st minute.

Despite surrendering possession to Man City, Klopp's side gave nothing away in the first half, restricting Erling Haaland to a single half-chance before half-time.

However, things changed in the second half, with Pep Guardiola's team stepping up their effort to close the gap.

It was Man City to control the tempo and create chances after the interval, yet Liverpool had the first glorious opportunity through second-half substitute Darwin Nunez.

The Uruguayan forward broke one-on-one with Ederson only a few minutes since his introduction but failed to convert as the Brazilian goalkeeper pulled off a stunning save.

Man City punished Nunez's miss almost instanteniouslly. Julian Alvarez latched onto the rebound inside the six-yard box to get off the mark on his competitive debut.

When it looked like the back-to-back Premier League champions had the game under control, Ruben Dias' handball sent Mohamed Salah to the spot in the 83rd minute.

Like it was the case on so many occasions during his illustrious five-year stint at Anfield, the Egyptian superstar was relentless from the spot to restore Liverpool's lead.

Deep inside the stoppage time, Nunez removed all doubts, heading home a superb cross from Andy Robertson to seal his team's first trophy this season.
